Part Of the camp’s workday in November consisted of restoring the wall around John Hemming’s burial plot. John Hemming is the father of Charles Hemming who paid for and erected the Confederate monument in Hemming Park.

Rifles, Rails, & History, Tavares 2014
On the weekend of September 26-28, Kirby-Smith Camp #1209 invaded Wooten Park in Tavares to take part with the Florida Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans in the Rifles, Rails & History living history event. A camp complete with tents, the 1209 artillery crew with cannon, the Confederate observation balloon and the H.L. Hunley submarine were on display. Although it was a rainy weekend, a good time was had by all.

Commander Bob Sieg of the General Joseph Finegan Camp #745 gave a very informative talk about rhe life and military career of General Joseph Wheeler. Wheeler was a Confederate cavalry general during the War of Northern Aggression and was also a US General during the Spanish American War.

August Work Day at Old City Cemetery
On Saturday, August 23rd, members of Kirby-Smith Camp #1209 attended our monthly work day at Old City Cemetery. As per our agreement with the City of Jacksonville, trash was picked up along the roads surrounding the cemetery. The sprinkler system in the Confederate section was also repaired. Thanks to our members, Old City is really looking good and is something to be proud of.
