Cemetery Work

Cemetery Work

September 2018 Cemetery Work Day

This past weekend on the camp came together and up filled our duty to one of the camps oldest traditions. Thanks to John Ruff and John Carson the Soldiers and Sailors plot is pristine with very work needed to it. The  turn out was very good and we accomplished quite a bit. We have been working to clear the underbrush and low hanging limbs from inside the cemetery. We were able to get majority of that done and truly makes a difference.

The more people that come out the more we can do and we encourage you to come out and have a good time with the camp.  As always we walked the surrounding streets picking up the trash and keeping up with our part in the Keeping Jacksonville Beautiful Program.

On this work day the camp came together to award some of our members the Presidential Volunteers award. This award is given to those individuals who volunteer their time in various forms of Historical Teaching and attending at cemetery work days. Compatriots David Hallum, Billy Feagle and Chris Elands were awarded the bronze level volunteering 100 hours of service. We appreciate everyone who comes out and this is just a small way to say thank you.

August 2018 Cemetery Work Day

On Saturday the 25th the camp came together and had a great time cleaning up Old City Cemetery and the surrounding streets. Keeping up with one of the camps oldest traditions and doing our part in the Keeping Jacksonville Beautiful Program. We had a great turn out and got a lot completed. As usual we walked around picking up the trash and made sure all was in order. John Ruff and John Carson have kept our plot there pristine and truly the gem of the cemetery.

Some of the trees in the cemetery need to be trimmed as they were blocking the view of the cemetery and needed to be chopped off, also trimmed up a lot of the bushes around the cemetery. The work is not done and next month we will come back and try to get the rest. The more that come out the more we can do and we truly appreciate all that came out and made this a good time. Also, again the Martha Reid chapter UDC came out and helped with the plot as well, truly a good time.

Next Cemetery Work day will be September 22nd at 8:30am at Old City Cemetery, please bring work gloves and a trash grabber if you have one.

Cemetery and Camp Work Day

This month’s Cemetery Work Day was very productive and we had an amazing turn out, Thank you to all that came out. We raised a military marker that had sunken in too deep in the plot next to ours. We have an large old tree on the western end that needs to be removed and were able to chip a good chunk away. As usual we walked the grounds and the streets cleaning up the trash and doing our part for the community in the Keep Jacksonville Beautiful program. Thank you to Mr. Ruff and all the other people that come out there and do what they can for our plot. It truly Shines in the light.

After getting the bulk done at the cemetery we had a crew break off and head to the Warehouse.  We had some maintenance on the Van that needed to be done. The mast needed to be lubricated and oiled section by section and had to be held down so we could reach each section. Here wood was used too hold down lower sections so it could be oiled properly. Always learning something new with this project and is always amazing to see that mast go up. Thank you all that came out and helped with the Projects.
